Cashback and Rebates for South African Players

Checked by rewinly.com editorsUpdated Oct 27, 2026

This section of rewinly.com covers cashback and rebate offers for players in South Africa, with amounts in rand. The mechanics are the same as anywhere: a refund of part of your losses or of your stakes, paid as cash or as bonus credit, and its real value depends on the rate, the cap, the cycle and any playthrough.

The legal picture is different from the US. In South Africa, online sports betting with a provincially licensed bookmaker is permitted, while online casino games are not. Gambling is for adults 18 and over. Before you claim any refund, check that the operator appears on the National Gambling Board's verified operators register.

How online gambling is regulated in South Africa

Gambling in South Africa is governed by the National Gambling Act, 2004 together with the gambling laws of each province. The National Gambling Board (NGB) oversees the industry nationally, while the nine Provincial Licensing Authorities issue, administer, suspend and close gambling licences within their own provinces.

Sports betting

Bookmaking, betting on sport, is one of the permitted forms of gambling and requires a provincial licence. The NGB has stated that its verified operators register includes licensed bookmakers authorised by provincial authorities to offer online sports betting within the existing legislative framework. Online betting has grown fast: the NGB told Parliament in June 2026 that online betting revenue rose from R23.7 billion in 2022/23 to R62.1 billion in 2025/26.

Online casino games

Section 11 of the Act provides that a person must not engage in or make available an interactive game except as authorised by national law. The NGB has said the answer to whether online or interactive gambling is legal is "no", with the exception of online sports betting, and that casino games can only be played at licensed land-based casinos. The National Gambling Amendment Act of 2008, which would have regulated interactive gambling, has never come into operation. A Remote Gambling Bill (B11-2024) has been proposed, but in May 2026 the NGB stressed that unenacted bills do not change the law.

The consequences are real for players as well as operators. According to the NGB, a conviction under the Act can lead to a fine of up to R10 million or up to ten years' imprisonment, and winnings from unlawful gambling can be forfeited to the State. Unlicensed offshore sites also leave you with no regulator to turn to if a withdrawal is refused.

What this means for cashback offers

Only consider refunds from bookmakers licensed by a South African provincial board, and verify the licence on the NGB register or with the provincial board named on the site. Casino-style cashback from an offshore site is not a legal option in South Africa. If gambling is causing harm, the National Responsible Gambling Programme offers free, confidential counselling 24/7 on toll-free 0800 006 008.
