Casino Cashback: How Loss Refunds Work and What They Are Worth
Checked by rewinly.com editorsUpdated Oct 27, 2026
Casino cashback is a promotion that returns a percentage of your net losses, or of your total wagers, over a set period, paid as withdrawable cash or as bonus money. It does not change the odds of any game; it lowers the cost of the play you were going to do anyway.
Two offers with the same headline rate can differ several times over in real value. The basis of the calculation, the cycle, the cap, the games that count and any playthrough attached to the refund all matter. This page explains each factor, shows the math with a worked example and ends with a checklist you can apply to any offer listed on rewinly.com.

The casino tracks your qualifying play over a defined window, typically a day, a week or a month. At the end of the window it calculates the refund from the terms, applies any maximum and credits the result to your account, sometimes automatically and sometimes only after you opt in or claim it.
The money arrives in one of two forms. Cash cashback lands in your real-money balance and can be withdrawn at once. Bonus cashback lands as bonus funds that must be wagered a set number of times before withdrawal. The second is common and noticeably less valuable, as the example below shows.
Because cashback is calculated after the fact, it never makes a game favorable on its own. Use the cashback calculator to see what a given rate returns on your typical session.
Net-loss cashback vs wager-based rebates
Net-loss cashback pays a percentage of what you lost: total losses minus total wins over the period. If you finish the window ahead, you get nothing. A typical formula is: refund = rate × max(0, net loss), limited by the cap.
Wager-based rebates pay a small percentage of your turnover, the total amount staked, regardless of the result. Rates are much lower because turnover is far larger than net loss: at a 4% house edge, $1,000 in spins carries an expected loss of about $40, so a 0.5% turnover rebate ($5) and a 12.5% net-loss refund on that same $40 are roughly equivalent on average.
Net-loss offers concentrate value in losing sessions; turnover rebates pay steadily, including in winning weeks. Neither is better in general; compare them on the same expected loss.
Typical structures: daily, weekly and VIP tiers
Most programs fall into a few patterns:
Daily cashback: small refunds calculated every 24 hours, often with a low cap per day.
Weekly cashback: the most common cycle; losses are netted over seven days, so a good Monday can offset a bad Thursday.
Tiered or VIP cashback: the rate rises as you climb a loyalty ladder, usually earned through turnover. Higher tiers may also raise caps or remove playthrough.
One-off loss refunds: a welcome offer that refunds first-day or first-week net losses once, up to a limit.
Longer cycles net more wins against losses, which usually lowers the refund for a player who alternates good and bad days. Shorter cycles pay more often but cap lower.
Wagering on cashback and what it costs you
When cashback is paid as bonus money, every dollar you must wager to clear it is exposed to the house edge. A useful approximation of its real value is: value ≈ cashback − (playthrough × cashback × house edge).
Example
You lose $500 net in a week on an offer of 10% cashback, capped at $100, paid as bonus funds with a 5x playthrough. You clear it on slots with an assumed 4% house edge.
Cashback: 10% × $500 = $50 (below the $100 cap).
Required wagering: 5 × $50 = $250.
Expected cost of that wagering: $250 × 4% = $10.
Approximate real value: $50 − $10 = $40, or 8% of your loss rather than 10%.
The same $50 paid as cash is worth $50. With a 1x playthrough cleared on blackjack at 0.43%, the cost is about $0.22. Playthrough on high-edge games can eat most of a small refund.
Which games count, and why house edge matters
Terms often exclude or down-weight table games and live dealer play when you clear a bonus, and some cashback applies only to slots. Where you have a choice, the house edge decides how much a playthrough costs. Typical figures:
Game
House edge
Blackjack, basic strategy
0.28%–0.43% (rules vary)
Video poker, full-pay Jacks or Better
0.46%
Baccarat, banker bet
1.06%
Baccarat, player bet
1.24%
Craps, pass line
1.41%
Roulette, single zero
2.70%
Roulette, double zero
5.26%
Slots
2%–15%
Keno
25%–29%

How to compare cashback offers
Read the full terms and run each offer through the same checklist:
Rate and basis: percentage of net loss or of turnover?
Cycle: daily, weekly or monthly netting?
Cap: maximum per cycle, and any minimum loss to qualify.
Payout form: cash or bonus funds, and the playthrough if bonus.
Eligible games: which games count toward losses and toward clearing.
Expiry and opt-in: how long you have to claim and clear it.
Licensing: whether the operator is licensed in your state. Offshore sites are not licensed by any US state.

Frequently asked questions
Is casino cashback free money?
No. It refunds part of a loss you have already taken, so on average you still lose more than you get back. Treat it as a discount on play you would do anyway.
Is cash cashback better than bonus cashback?
Usually. Cash can be withdrawn at once; bonus cashback must be wagered first, and the house edge on that wagering reduces its value, sometimes by a large share on high-edge games.
Do I get cashback if I win during the week?
On a net-loss offer, no: if your wins exceed your losses for the cycle, the refund is zero. Turnover-based rebates pay regardless of result.
Is cashback taxable?
The IRS treats gambling winnings as taxable income and lets you deduct losses only if you itemize, keep records and stay within reported winnings. How a specific refund is reported depends on its form, so keep statements and check current IRS guidance or a tax professional.
