Sportsbook Cashback: Lossback, Rebates and Reduced Juice Compared
Checked by rewinly.com editorsUpdated Oct 27, 2026
Sportsbook cashback is a refund of part of your losing stakes, or a small share of everything you bet, credited as cash or as bonus bets. The most common US form is lossback, also sold as bet insurance or a second-chance bet: if a qualifying wager loses, the book returns the stake up to a limit, usually as a bonus bet.
A refund paid in bonus bets is worth less than the same amount in cash, and a lower margin on every bet can beat an occasional refund. This page shows how to put lossback, rebates and reduced juice on the same scale, with the arithmetic, and explains why the state license behind the offer matters.

Single-bet lossback: one qualifying bet is covered; if it loses, you get the stake back up to a stated maximum.
Net-loss cashback: a percentage of your net losses over a day, week or event is refunded, usually capped.
Turnover rebates: a small percentage of every stake is returned whether the bet wins or loses.
Each comes with conditions: minimum odds, eligible markets, opt-in, maximum refund and an expiry date for the credit. The cashback calculator shows the refund on your own numbers.
Lossback and bet insurance
Lossback promotions often attach to a specific bet type, such as a parlay that loses by one leg, a same-game parlay or a first bet on a new account. The refund is usually issued as a bonus bet, not cash.
That distinction is central. A bonus bet typically pays only the profit if it wins: the bonus stake itself is not returned. A $20 bonus bet at even money that wins pays $20, not $40. So a "$100 back" headline is not $100 in your pocket; its value depends on the odds you use it at and the chance the bet wins.
Before opting in, check whether the refund is per bet or per account, how long the bonus bet stays valid and the minimum odds it can be placed at.
Reduced juice vs rebates
The margin, or juice, is the price built into every line. At standard -110 pricing on both sides of an even contest you risk $110 to win $100; if the book takes $110 on each side, it collects $220, pays the winner $210 and keeps $10, a hold of about 4.55% of handle.
At reduced juice of -105 on both sides, the book keeps $5 of $210, about 2.38%. On $10,000 of balanced action that is roughly $455 vs $238 in expected cost.
Compare that with a rebate: a 1% turnover rebate on $10,000 returns $100, which brings -110 pricing down to about $355 in expected cost, still worse than -105 with no rebate. Reduced juice helps on every bet; a lossback helps on the bets it covers. For frequent bettors, the margin usually matters more than an occasional refund.
What a bonus bet is worth in cash
Because the stake is not returned, a bonus bet converts to cash at well under face value. The conversion rate depends on the odds you choose.
Example
You receive a $100 bonus bet from a lossback offer.
At even money (+100): a win pays $100 profit. If the bet wins about 48% of the time once the margin is priced in, expected value ≈ 0.48 × $100 = $48.
At +300: a win pays $300 profit. The line implies 25%; allowing for margin, say the true chance is 23%. Expected value ≈ 0.23 × $300 = $69.
Cash refund of the same $100: worth $100.
The probabilities above are illustrative assumptions, not predictions. The point holds generally: higher odds tend to convert a bonus bet at a better rate on average, at the cost of more variance, and a cash refund beats any bonus-bet refund of the same face value.
State-regulated sportsbooks vs offshore sites
Sports betting is legal in 39 states plus Washington, D.C., and 31 of those states plus D.C. allow online wagering, according to one state tracker (data as of July 18, 2026). Its online list: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming, plus D.C. Rules change, so confirm with your state regulator.
State-licensed books operate under a regulator that sets promotion rules, handles complaints and runs self-exclusion. Offshore sites are not licensed by any US state. The Michigan Gaming Control Board has warned that unregulated sites often lack basic consumer protections and that players may face delayed or denied payouts and no access to dispute resolution. An attractive rebate is worth nothing if the balance cannot be withdrawn.
How to compare sportsbook refund offers
Form of refund: cash, site credit or bonus bet (stake not returned).
Basis: one bet, net loss over a period, or turnover.
Cap and minimum odds: the maximum refund and the odds the qualifying bet and the bonus bet must meet.
Eligible markets: some offers cover only parlays, specific leagues or live bets.
Expiry: how many days you have to use the bonus bet.
Everyday pricing: whether the book's standard juice cancels out the promotion.
License: whether the book is licensed in the state you are in.

Frequently asked questions
Is a lossback bonus bet the same as cash?
No. A bonus bet usually pays only the winnings, not the stake, so its expected cash value is well below face value. A cash refund of the same amount is worth more.
What is better: reduced juice or a rebate?
It depends on volume, but on standard -110 lines the margin is about 4.55% of balanced handle, and -105 cuts that to about 2.38%. A small turnover rebate rarely closes that gap.
Do offshore sportsbooks have to follow US promotion rules?
Offshore sites are not licensed by any US state, so no state regulator oversees their terms, payouts or complaints. State regulators warn that players may have no recourse.
Are winnings from bonus bets taxable?
The IRS treats sports betting winnings as taxable income that must be reported, whether or not you receive a Form W-2G. Keep records of wins and losses and check current IRS guidance.
